Smart City links

Sarajevo and Banja Luka, champion smart city concept as two major communities in Bosnia and Herzegovina. The most recent example is the Future City Innovation Challenge, launched jointly by the UNDP, the City of Banja Luka, and the Ministry of Scientific and Technological Development, Higher Education and Information Society of the Republic of Srpska.

Banja Luka Future City Innovation Challenge

Various stakeholders including civil society organisations, private sector, universities, media, and public institutions submitted a total of 58 project proposals, ten of which were selected for financing. The focus of the Future City Innovation Challenge was on urban and rural spaces, aimed at delivering smart solutions that contribute to a greener, more resilient, inclusive, and sustainable Banja Luka in the future.

It is expected that at least five out of ten selected projects will deliver transformative and scalable smart solutions that will increase the life quality of at least 3000 urban and rural residents of Banja Luka. The project is being implemented within the Banja Luka Strategy framework and the overall budget for this activity amounts to 500.000 BAM (cca. 250.000 EUR).

The call focused on four topics: traffic, environmental protection, energy efficiency, and e-Government. The selected projects will tackle various challenges including waste management and selection, traffic, electric energy consumption optimisation for public lighting, traffic safety, improved local produce sales, and improving traffic safety for disabled.

Smart Sarajevo Initiative

Previously, the UNDP has partnered with the City of Sarajevo, the Municipality of Stari Grad, and Canton Sarajevo to launch the Smart Sarajevo Initiative in 2018. The open call attracted 23 applicants that met technical requirements, ten of which were financed.

Several smart solutions have been introduced since launch in the Municipality of Stari Grad such as the City Mind Lab and Consul Platform, IT Girls for Smart City summer school. Most imporatantly, the Initiative attracted significant citizens’ interest and engagement.
